Scale Aircraft For Free Flight

Eric Coates Edited By Vic Smeed

The major difference between free-flight and radio-controlled scale models is that all adjustments to the flight pattern of the former must be made before release or, put another way, they must be capable of stable flight, both under power and on the glide, without the opportunity of in-flight alterations.
This challenge most surely met by lightly loaded,slow-flying models based on full size machines having those characteristics, best typified by early biplanes, and the leading exponent of scale models with this approach was the late Eric Coates. His series of articles in Aeromodeller magazine in the early 1970's is still regarded as the classic exposition on the subject, as relevant today as when first written. It offers advice on choice of prototype, construction, covering, finishing and detailing, plus trimming and flying, up to competition standard if required.
A degree of editing has been required but other than where the product is no longer available , nothing basic has been altered and the book will be welcomed by builders of scale flying models the world over.
